zoom in on culture!

The Culture Snapshot is an organizational diagnostic that can be used to take the ‘pulse' of an organization, department or team. Ideally, it is used to engage groups in conversation about the culture patterns that they are experiencing and the way that these support or get in the way of success.

Much like a camera snapshot captures a group photo, it provides a set of images about what is going on. With their own data to explore, groups are able to focus on the way that day-to-day behaviors and practices are influencing group performance. Importantly, it provides people with a safe means for opening up conversations about aspects of the way things get done that need to be shifted for future success and provides groups with information for setting priorities and taking action to improve the way they work together.

Each person completes a short, confidential web-enabled survey. The responses from up to seven groups can be compared - for example sales, service, admin and management or leaders and staff or generational groupings. The Culture Snapshot report includes data displays and scorecard ratings that describe the different experiences and perspectives of the groups and illustrate how strong specific aspects of culture are. Core Culture Patterns related to Trust, Knowledge & Information Sharing, Adaptation and Affiliation are assessed as well as Strategic Culture Patterns such as Collaboration and Creativity & Idea Generation. This is supplemented with an assessment of Leadership Style and how it supports development of a culture aligned with strategy. Practical recommendations round out the report.

“We have gained valuable insight into the strengths and weaknesses of our departmental culture. The workshop provided a venue for open discussion, realization and appreciation of team players’ perceptions and feelings, as well as developing a workable action plan for self and departmental improvement. It has allowed us the opportunity to identify key issues, prioritize them and work on successful resolution for each item separately without the feeling of being overwhelmed.”
